Today, as I was walking around Dublin which looks like a wild-wild-west-town-now-too-old-and frail-to-be-wild, a survey guy approached me to ask what made me smile about the city, obviously thinking I was a habitant... After hesitating for a moment, I replied "the river", having dreamt by the river yesterday. Actually what made me smile was the dream and my love for any flowing water. Then I thought about this question for a few hours more. What was the real answer? What was it about Dublin?
Then I found the answer.
Dublin didn't make me smile. It is a gloomy town. What is more is that there is no problem with being gloomy here. The town encourages depressive gray souls. Don't take it negative. Think of it as a sad song: sad, but still beautiful. This city makes you want to read poetry, read books you never thought could exist, listen you what you couldn't dare listen before because you didn't want to "ruin" the rest of your day Wetting your eyes without making you feel guilty about not being happy. Looking back in history, happiness is a recent trend after all.

*Dubh linn means dark water.
The water that pooled in the castle was muddy.
*Half the population was killed in the plague, not one thirds like the rest of Europe. The reason: people blocked the water, thinking it was the main medium of contagiousness. They were wrong. It was the rats.
*More to come on the next 7 days...
